When I arrive I begin with asking about the night. How baby has been sleeping and eating, how parents are feeling. Then I can create a plan for the day centered around possible issues. I address any areas that may seem daunting in the household, focus on baby care so parents can take care of their own needs or tasks and finish with the whole home simplified.
Our evenings will usually start with a check-in with parents about how the day has gone so far. Any concerns or joys they may want to share. A quick conversation on expectations for the evening then off to rest while I care for baby. This could look a few different ways depending on nursing, bottle feeding or both. I burp, change and soothe baby back to sleep gently working on building steady sleep habits. When baby is peacefully resting I can wash any bottles or pump parts so they are ready when needed and occasionally do other quiet tasks such as folding laundry. Then rest myself so I can be ready in a few short hours when we need to feed again. I will always attend to baby primarily and any other tasks come if time allows. The hope is to have the final feed then settle baby in for one last sleep stretch as I leave in the morning to maximize rest for the whole family.
